Hey S. und vielen Dank, dass Du Dir die Zeit nimmst, um diese Fragen zu beantworten. Gehen wir es gleich an: Ihr seid gerade im Studio Eures Gitarristen Archcaust, um Euer zweites Album aufzunehmen. Aber bevor wir darüber reden, könntest Du unseren LeserInnen noch einen Überblick darüber geben, was bei ARS VENEFICIUM in den Jahren zwischen 2016 und 2019 so passiert ist – also zwischen dem ersten und dem zweiten Album?

Hey Jonathan, vielen Dank für Dein Interesse bezüglich ARS VENEFICIUM. Ja, das ist korrekt, wir nehmen gerade unser zweites vollwertiges Album auf. Nun, um auf diese Periode zurückzuschauen: Direkt nachdem „The Reign Of The Infernal King“ im September 2016 veröffentlicht wurde, haben wir uns auf unsere Live-Rituale konzentriert. In den Jahren 2016 und 2017 haben wir viele Shows und Festivals bespielt, und wir sind auch durch Europa getourt. Im Jahre 2018 sind wir aber ein bisschen auf die Bremse getreten was Live-Performances betrifft, weil ich etwas Zeit haben wollte, sodass Ronarg und ich uns darauf konzentrieren konnten, das zweite Album zu schreiben. Wir haben im September 2018 auch einen ganz neuen Song für eine 7‘‘-Split-Veröffentlichung mit unseren russischen Brüdern Ulvdalir aufgenommen. Diese Scheibe wird im Juni diesen Jahres veröffentlicht werden, weil wir unsere Release-Show beim Under The Black Sun-Festival in Deutschland haben werden.

Gab es einmal eine Zeit, in welcher Ihr alle gemeinsam im Studio wart, um die Instrumente aufzunehmen oder Euch die Tracks anzuhören? Oder wie arbeiten ARS VENEFICIUM grundsätzlich, wenn es darum geht, ein neues Album aufzunehmen? Wie arbeitet Ihr zusammen?

Nein, so etwas gab es nicht, da wir alle über Belgien verstreut leben (ich, zum Beispiel, lebe im Osten, und zwar in der Ecke zwischen Holland und Deutschland, wohingegen mein Drummer und mein Bassist im Westen in der Nähe der Küste wohnen). Deshalb ist es für uns als Band sehr schwierig, die Zeit zu finden, sodass wir zusammenkommen können. Jeder nimmt seinen Part auf und schickt ihn dann an Archcaust, der die Teile zusammensetzt und dann an die nächste Person schickt, die dran ist. Nur Archcaust und ich kommen während der Aufnahmen des Gesangs zusammen, da diese in seinem Studio zuhause stattfinden. Die Musik von ARS VENEFICIUM wird von Ronarg und mir geschrieben, so war es schon von Anfang an. Ronarg komponiert die Linien für alle Instrumente und gemeinsam finalisieren wir die Kompositionen für die Songs. Ich schreibe natürlich die Lyrics, die Gesangslinien und bestimme auch den Hintergrundgesang. Wenn das erledigt ist, übt die Band die Musik einfach zu Hause und wir versuchen immer mal wieder zusammenzukommen, um zu proben (wenn wir dafür die Zeit finden, haha).

Das letzte Mal wurden die Drums im Mortsella Studio aufgenommen. Wird das dieses Mal auch wieder der Fall sein? Und werden sich wieder die Wolfthrone Studios um das Mixing und das Mastering kümmern? Wenn nicht, mit wem habt Ihr Euch da zusammengetan und warum?

Das ist richtig. Norgameus lebt in der Nähe von ihm und ist eng mit dem Typen hinter dem Mortsella Studio befreundet. Deshalb ist es der einfachste und auch der entspannteste Weg, mit ihm dafür zusammenzuarbeiten. Das Abmischen und das Mastern machen wieder die Wolfthrone Studios. Der Kerl dahinter wird mit jedem Album, das er anfasst, besser, und deshalb hat er unsere totale Unterstützung und wir vertrauen ihm, dass er den Nagel wieder auf den Kopf treffen wird.

Außerdem arbeiten die Wolfthrone Studios und unser Label Immortal Frost Productions sehr eng zusammen und deshalb scheint das einfach richtig zu sein.



Kannst Du uns schon verraten, wann das neue Album das Tageslicht sehen wird und kannst Du auch schon ein paar Geheimnisse, wie zum Beispiel den Albumtitel, ausplaudern?

Wir hoffen, dass das Album Ende dieses Jahres erscheinen wird, vielleicht Anfang 2020. Es hängt vor allem mit der Zeit zusammen, die wir für die Produktion brauchen, und dies liegt nicht in unseren Händen. Das neue Album wird „Usurpation Of The Seven“ heißen. Es wird wieder neun Songs geben, so wie schon auf „The Reign Of The Infernal King“.

Du hast schon gesagt, dass ihr auch noch eine 7‘‘-Single mit einem neuen Song als Teaser für das Album veröffentlichen werdet. Was können wir uns von diesem Track erwarten? Gibt es eine Änderung was Stil und Atmosphäre betrifft? Wo siehst Du die größten Unterschiede zu den Songs auf dem ersten Album?

Das wird tatsächlich geschehen. Wir haben im September 2018 einen neuen Song aufgenommen, wie ich schon gesagt hatte. Diese Split-Scheibe wird gemeinsam mit Ulvdalir aus Russland veröffentlicht und wird im Juni 2019 herauskommen.

Der Song soll einen Teaser für das zweite Album darstellen (wenn es um unsere Fortschritte als Band geht), aber er wird auch eine eigenständige Premiere, weil sich der Track nicht auf dem neuen Album finden wird. Das ist wirklich eine exklusive Veröffentlichung als 7‘‘-Vinyl und als digitaler Release.

Unser Stil ist gleich geblieben. Es geht direkt nach vorne mit vielen Blastparts, Midtempo-Passagen, melodischen Riffs, rauen Akkorden und vielen Variationen, die letztlich das ausmachen, was wir tun. Der größte Unterschied findet man wohl in der Produktion, wenn man „The Reign Of The Infernal King“ mit dem Song vergleicht, der nun als 7‘‘-Vinyl erscheint. Man hört auf jeden Fall die Entwicklung bezüglich des Komponierens und auch was die Wolfthrone Studios betrifft heraus. Deshalb sind wir auch sehr glücklich, dass wir weiterhin mit ihm kooperieren. Wir sind nicht die einzigen, die sich bezüglich des Kompositionsprozesses entwickeln, sondern er tut das auch, was das Mixing und das Mastering betrifft.

Bezüglich der Live-Front: Plant Ihr schon eine Tour, welche die Veröffentlichung Eures neuen Albums begleiten wird? Kannst Du uns darüber schon etwas erzählen?

Unsere Buchungsagentur IFP Bookings & Tour Management kümmert sich darum. Aber ja, da sind schon einige Dinge in Planung. Wir wurden auch schon für ein paar Festivals gebucht, außerdem sind eine Europa- sowie eine China-Tour für 2020 geplant.

Hey S. and many thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Let’s get right to it: you are currently in the studio of your guitarist Archcaust to record your second album. Before we talk about that, could you give our readers an overview about what happened in ARS VENEFICIUM in the years between 2016 and 2019 – so between the first album and the new coming long player?

Dear Jonathan! Thank your for your interest towards ARS VENEFICIUM and correct, we’re currently recording our second full-lenght album. Well, to look back on that period, right after "The Reign Of The Infernal King" got released in September 2016, we basically focused on our live rituals. In 2016 and 2017 we’ve played a massive amount of shows, festivals and toured throughout Europe.

In 2018, however, I hit the break a little bit on the live performances since I wanted to create some free time so myself & Ronarg could focus on writing the second full-lenght album. We also recorded a brand new song for a 7”-split record with our Russian brothers from Ulvdalir in September 2018. This record will be released in June 2019 as we’ll be having our release show at Under The Black Sun festival in Germany.

Was there a time when all of you guys were in the studio together recording instruments or listening to the tracks? Or how does ARS VENEFICIUM in general work when recording a new album? What is your method of working together as a band?

No, there wasn’t - due to the fact that we live all across Belgium (for example, I live in the East in the corner with Netherlands & Germany and my drummer and bassist live in the West near to the shoreline). So it is very difficult for us as a band to find the time and come together. Each record their part and then send it over to Archcaust who puts it all together and sends it to the next person in line. Only myself and Archcaust come together during my vocal recordings which happen at his home studio.

The music of ARS VENEFICIUM is being written by Ronarg and myself, like it always has been from the beginning. Ronarg writes all the instruments and together we finalize the compositions of the songs and I of course write the lyrics, vocal lines and backing vocal lines. From there on, the rest of the band just practices the music at home and here and there we try to come together for a rehearsal (if we find the time for it haha).

Last time the drums were recorded at the Mortsella Studio, will that also be the case for the coming second album? And will the mixing and mastering once again be done by Wolfthrone Studios? If not, with whom have you teamed up and why?

Correct, Norgameus lives near him and is close friends with the guy behind Mortsella Studio. Therefore it is the  easiest and most relaxed way to work like this for him. The mixing and mastering will again be handled by Wolfthrone Studios, the guy is improving his skills with every album he touches and therefore has our total support and trust that he will again nail it! Also Wolfthrone Studios & our record label Immortal Frost Productions work together very closely in partnership and therefore it seems only righteous.



Can you give us a date when the new album will see the light of day and can you already reveal some secrets like the title or how many songs will be on the new album?

We hope to release the new album by the end of this year, perhaps early 2020. It all depends on the production time et cetera which is out of our hands. The new album will be entitled: “Usurpation Of The Seven”. The album will again hold in total nine songs like on “The Reign Of The Infernal King”.

You have mentioned that you are going to release a 7’’-vinyl with a new song as a teaser for the new album in the coming months. What can we expect from the new track? Has the style and atmosphere changed from the first album to your new songs? Where do you see the biggest differences?

This is indeed what is about to happen. We’ve recorded one new song in September 2018 as I’ve mentioned in the first question. This 7”-record will be a split with Ulvdalir (Russia) and shall be released in June 2019.

This song will be a teaser towards the second full-lenght album (regarding our progress as a band), however it’ll also be a premiere on its own as this song will not appear on the new album. It will be exclusively released on the 7” vinyl and in digital version.

Our style has remained the same. It’s very straight forward with a lot of blast beats, mid tempos, melodic riffing, harsh chords and a lot of variations who kind of brand our style of what we do. The biggest difference would probably be the production. When you compare “The Reign Of The Infernal King” with the song which will be released on the 7”-vinyl record you will definitely witness the progress in song-writing and the growth in Wolfthrone Studios. Therefore we’re also more than happy to keep on working with him. As we’re not the only ones who keep growing in experience of writing music, so does he in mixing & mastering.

Concerning the live-shows: are you already planning a tour accompanying the release of your new album? Can you already tell us something about that?

Our booking agency IFP Bookings & Tour Management is handling all of that. But yeah, some things are definitely in the make! We’ve been confirmed to a few festivals so far, also a European Tour and a China Tour is planned for 2020.
